Dr. Funes

As a parent, we understand how important it is to feel comfortable with the team taking care of your child’s health. Our pediatricians are dedicated to providing your child with the best care possible. We’d like to take some time and introduce you to our pediatricians, one by one.

Christopher Funes, MD, FAAP, is just one of our amazing primary care providers at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. Dr. Funes has a heart for helping others and improving their lives. Read on to learn more about his passion, hobbies and other interests.

What are some of your hobbies?
Running, reading (a lot!), playing with my kids, and taking trips with my wife and kids.

What was your favorite book as a child?
Tie between To Kill a Mockingbird and A Tale of Two Cities. I admit I’m a geek.

What made you want to be a doctor?
My dad is a pediatrician, and I was able to see the impact he made on his patients’ lives, how much they appreciated him and how he got to be part of their families – I wanted people to say that about me.

Why do you like working with kids?
Kids are by nature generally positive, trusting and want to please others. Not that they don’t do the wrong thing on occasion, but they usually don’t do it out of malice; they just don’t have great judgment yet. It’s hard to be around kids and not have a positive attitude.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
To cure any illness, of course! It hurts my heart to see kids suffer.

What is your favorite holiday?
Thanksgiving, by FAR! So many others have gotten out of control with gift giving and people feeling obligated. Thanksgiving is just about being with family and reflecting on what you are grateful for.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?
Reynosa, Mexico. I was in a place so poor that the church only had three walls and no roof. We were setting up a clinic, but had to clear out the chickens from the church/clinic! Folks waited sometimes all day to see a doctor, and it was inspiring to see how patient these parents were as they waited, just because they wanted their child to be able to see the doctor.

Who inspires you and why?
My wife, my parents, my brothers and my kids. My wife works longer hours than I do and still does all the mom and wife stuff better than anyone else I know. My parents because they both worked and were still amazing parents. Now that I’m a parent I can’t figure out how they made it look so easy, because I struggle so much! My brothers are still my role models and my ‘big brothers’ no matter how old I get. My kids are so funny and clever — they teach me something on a daily basis.

What are you passionate about?
Improving the quality of healthcare delivered in our city and state. There is such an opportunity for improving the care patients receive by standardizing care, improving access to care and making sure patients get the right care.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?
Ms. Cannon, my homeroom teacher in Junior High at St. Thomas More. She convinced a tiny, scrawny, self-conscious 12-year-old boy that he was going to be a success, and someday feel comfortable in his own skin. And Dr. Karam. There are probably about 10,000 doctors working around the country who would say Dr. Karam is one of their favorite teachers.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?
A family dog. My dog has it great.
