Make a life-saving commitment


It’s been a couple of weeks, and January 1 is fading in the rear view mirror, just like a lot of resolutions.

A lot of men ignore their health and don’t take care of themselves like they should. What if this year, instead of resolutions you don’t keep, you commit to these five simple things that could actually save your life?

1. Check you out – at least once a year.

This is the hardest thing on the list, but is the most important. Pick a date on the calendar – it could be your birthday, Father’s Day or any other date that’s significant to you – and schedule a check-up with your primary care physician. It should include lab work and a “hands-on,” age-appropriate physical exam. Finding high blood pressure, pre-diabetes or some other disease early can save your life.

2. Don’t be shy.

Malignant melanoma (MM) is a silent killer. After years of sun exposure, MM is a sniper, hiding where most people never look. If left undetected, it may kill you by spreading throughout your body. A dermatologist is trained to spot the MM sniper, and that may mean taking off some clothing.

3. Stop smoking!

Smoking tobacco is the leading, most preventable cause of death worldwide. Enough said. Stop now. We can help.

4. Move it.

Exercise doesn’t have to be a major inconvenience to be beneficial to your health. Here is an efficient way to get your cardio in if you think you don’t have time. Pick an exercise (treadmill, elliptical, etc). Warm up for 2 minutes. Exercise at a reasonable baseline rate for 3 minutes. Then do a burst (as fast as you can go) for 30 seconds. Next, immediately return to your baseline rate for 3 minutes. Repeat this cycle five times, and you’re done. Do this three days per week, and you will actually improve your health.

5. Get your colon checked.

About one-third of all men never have their colons checked out, leaving them vulnerable to colon cancer. Early detection of colon cancer will save your life. If you are age 50 or above, you need to schedule your screening colonoscopy as part of this year’s promise to yourself and your family. You won’t feel a thing, and it may well turn out to be the best nap you’ve ever had!
