New Year's Resolutions

Welcome to 2018. The New Year is here, and with its arrival, many of us have set resolutions to help us be our best in the coming year. If you haven’t set any goals for the new year yet, it’s not too late.

Your resolutions may be focused on money, career goals, personal goals or health, but no matter what goals you have, we have some advice that can help. These six steps can help you refine your New Year’s resolutions and then stick to them:

1. Ask yourself why.

Why have you set this goal for yourself? The answer can be anything, but it is important for you to know. Knowing the reason behind your resolution can help you stay focused and on track .

2. Be specific.

Be as specific as you can with your resolutions. If your goal is to exercise more, how many days a week will you exercise? If your goal is to lose weight, how do you plan to do that? Abstract goals are hard to achieve, so try to set specific goals.

3. Schedule it.

Once you set your goals, you need to schedule time to achieve them. It’s hard to add new habits and activities into already busy schedules. Add gym time to your calendar, or schedule time on Sundays to meal prep for the week. Search for networking events that can help you to advance your career goals and commit to attending. Find the time in your life for your resolutions.

4. Share your goals.

Accountability is important. Share your goals with your friends and family. Having someone check up on you can be intimidating. You might have to tell them that you are not being successful, but there is nothing wrong with that. We all fail from time to time, especially when trying to change habits and lifestyles. Setting the goal is a big step, but it is equally important to forgive yourself if you fall short of the specific goal.

5. Track your progress.

Set aside time each day and write down what you did to advance your goals. This will help keep your resolutions top of mind, keeping you on track to become the healthier, happier, more successful person you pictured on January 1, 2018.

6. Make it fun.

Have fun with it! Maybe you couldn’t make it to the gym today. Put on some music and dance around the living room to burn those calories. Give yourself rewards for sticking with your resolutions. Find a friend who has similar goals and work on them together. Whatever it takes. Just have fun!
